92-Year-Old Robert Mugabe Set To Contest In Zimbabwe’s Next Presidential Elections

The 92-year-old president of Zimbabwe, Robert Mugabe has been endorsed as his ruling party’s presidential candidate for the 2018 national election.

 

The ruling Zanu-PF party declared its support for President Mugabe in the Zimbabwean south-eastern town of Masvingo on Saturday, with the party’s youth group suggesting that the longtime ruler should stay in power for life according to reports.

Leader of the party’s youth wing, Kudzai Chipanga said Mugabe’s birth certificate and ID should be changed to “President Robert Mugabe”. Mugabe himself admitted that there were people in his party who wanted him to step down, but urged them to make peace.




Robert Mugabe has been the ruler of Zimbabwe since the country gained independence from Britain in 1980, he won the last presidential election in 2013 even though there were claims of voting fraud. Opposition groups say that supporters of the strongman are out of touch with reality, and that the country is facing a stagnant economy, high levels of unemployment and falling living standards.
President Mugabe has blamed the country’s economic problems on sabotage by Western critics of his policies.
